How the fischertechnik System Works
While at first glance the parts used in the fischertechnik building system might look like those found in other construction sets you have seen or used in the past, don’t be fooled. fischertechnik is in fact a very sophisticated building system constructed around a core building block that allows for attachment from all six sides. While other systems simply stack, fischertechnik uses pins and grooves. Parts are designed to slide together and lock. This video will provide an overview of how the parts fit together, how girders and gears are assembled and used, and much more.
There is also a section included in the curriculum for both Introduction to STEM sets that also features an overview of the material covered in this video.
Build a Simple Model
Now that you’ve familiarized yourself with some of the types of parts found in the fischertechnik system, here is a video showing the step-by-step construction of a simple, but functional, two-gear model. Great Introduction to Technology Aspects of STEM

I bought this kit as a trial balloon for an after school STEM enrichment program for kids in grades 2 to 5. It looks ideal for introducing kids to the basics of construction with fischertechnik, with a variety of increasingly complex projects. I like that : - the projects introduce many basic concepts of structural integrity, motion, and energy translation; - many of the projects can be motorized with optional add-ons; - this kit leads seamlessly into the STEM 2 kit which adds sensors and computers to a variety of new projects; - the kit includes basic curricula, learning objectives, and questions for students; - the website has many supporting documents and videos. I think most kids (especially those older than 9 or 10) will want to move on to the STEM 2 projects, which are more complex and interesting. The price point seems very reasonable for what is included in the package.
